722.6 Rebuild

Need some advice from the folks at peachparts. I was hoping someone had experience with this dilema I have.

I'm thinking about a car that might need a rebuild but otherwise is a perfect 10 in/out. I know what I'm getting myself into here. I've been out of the game for a bit, so I need some advice here.

I don't think I got it in me to drop a transmission, rebuild it, and re-install it! I just don't have the health at all now. Any rough idea on what something like this might cost to have done from a reputable indy? I was thinking around $3200.00 or somewhere around that number with rebuild and labor.

*it's a 98 W210 Turbo Diesel**

Maybe a bit higher. FWIW Sun Valley sells tranny and TC for $2500.

Just curious: what are the symptoms? what's the mileage?

Close to 200K. Park to reverse it lunges and bucks like a horse. Reverse to drive also slams and lunges. First to second upshift is also just as rough. I'd like it not to be a rebuild, but this is the way I saw another W210 begin to fail before it was sold.

I've seen a lot of guys bragging about Sun Valley on the net. I've read they were quite reputable with rebuilds on the 722.3 trannys in W124s.

Does the car have a high idle?

If line pressure is high you would get a slam but not a lunge.

Also, these trans have a torque converter clutch sticking issue. The clutches don't have release springs and can act like a viscus clutch even when not commanded to apply.

Dodge used this trans for a while so there is a pretty good domestic USA knowledge base.

The 722.6 is electronically controlled. It will have all manner of problems if the electronic systems fail. Try pulling codes with an OBDII reader. You should get some in the P07xx range. If no codes show up on your scanner then I would pay to have a code scan with STAR diagnosis run by the dealer or indy.

Fortunately this is a relatively simple fix compared to a rebuild. The pan and valve body have to come down but you can do this with the car on jack stands. The valve body gets pulled and the plastic "conductor plate" that holds the solenoids and sensors is changed.

The biggest thing to watch for is you have to be sure not a single speck of dirt gets in the transmission while you have it open.

Once that is done you will have to get someone with STAR diagnosis (dealer or indy) to clear the codes.

Search around there is a wealth of information on the web about this. 722.6 is a great transmission except for the weak link which is the conductor plate.

I had the 722.4 in my 190D R&R's by Transmission Specialties in Wayne NJ. They also do a lot of Mercedes rebuilds, and have a good rep. I can recommend them without hesitation. Total cost was $1700, which included installing some extra parts I supplied: flex disk, shifter bushings, rear main seal, etc.

I read about this issue and its pretty strange. Another reason to use a proper ATF only.
