W123 auto shift lever high speed tapping

This is a new one to me. I'm no stranger to w123 cars, with many high mileage versions, but my 81 240D is about as pristine a low mileage example as one will find.

Driving it today, I noticed a new phenomena with the auto trans gear selector. The best description I have is the noise when a w123 speedo cable is binding under the dash... That rotating-tapping sound. However I have absolutely proven that this which I encountered is only related to minute differences in the location of the gearshift lever when it is in drive.

Some other observations:
-noise only observed at some speeds
-noise mostly observed when going through speed ranges on deceleration.
-noise absolutely related to slight variations in gear selector location
-absolutely no issue with selection of position

Ive seen discussions of bushings in there that can cause issues. I suppose that could be it. I've never encountered this in any of my other w123 cars, so would appreciate done thoughts as to what may be the cause, and if it is bushings or something else.

Thanks!

Worn shifter bushings will cause the reported symptoms.

^ Agreed, I replaced the bottom most one on two cars, no more funny noises.

Ok thanks. Not arguing but just surprised since my other higher mileage cars never did this.

I was mainly concerned that since it is extremely position-sensitive, that somehow the linkage for the lever was connected to the speedometer cable or some rotating/moving part, as that's the kind of noise it seems like.

But a fraction of a millimeter is all the difference it takes.

If your shifter bushings are worn, it will be highly apparent if you look at them. Nothing like a visual confirmation to put a doubt to rest.

^ Agreed. Slide under the car and have a look, you can see the lower most bushing.
