What readings should I expect testing W124 vacuum control valve?

If, with the engine off, I apply vacuum directly to the input (i.e. port that comes from the the vacuum pump) of the vacuum control valve, what reading should I expect? Should it hold vacuum?

With engine idling and 22" of vacuum supplied, I only get 5" of vacuum at output.

Hmm I always thought those worked like this:

Max vacuum at idle and as you throttle up vacuum tapers off to a lower number?

What happens when you move the throttle through its range?

Yes...here is FSM http://www.w124performance.com/service/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/07.1-1826.pdf.

In my case, at idle it's 5". As I apply throttle, it goes to a high of 6" then drops to 0".

Mild shift bumps at low speeds....headrests won't retract until higher engine speeds are reached.

So symptom wise it's not a big deal. But I wonder about strain on pump.

Yeah sounds like your high should be 11-13 or so inches then it should taper off down to zero.

Wonder if mine is working well or not..

Hmmm these symptoms might be similar in my car too.

The line that feeds the headrests branches off to the hvac too?

Yes. When I isolate that line and apply vacuum to it headrests retract immediately.

Kris, I think you need to branch out beyond cruise control units and start repairing VCVs!

Ha! Not thinking there is any electronics in that guy. Probably just a torn diaphragm or rubber jibblets. Any effects on your hvac?

No....no effects on HVAC as far as I can tell. What does vacuum do to HVAC other than open and close flaps?

Nothing, you are correct. In my system I have a leaky/bad pod so more vacuum would help it open and stay open.

I seem to vaguely remember a 5-6" reading when I checked at the switch over valve tree...

HMMMMMMM
