Torque Converter Bolt Head Broke Off
Hello All.
I need advice how to remove a broken torque converter bolt. I was gently trying to remove the bolt and thougt it was coming out. Nope, the 5mm allen bolt head snapped off. And of course, now it weeps oil. 1984 300D 215k I know I only have one chance and want to get opinions first. Thank you |

I am guessing it was the one used to drain the Converter. If so you have about the same chance of getting it out with the correct sized drill and Easy out type Tool as with other Bolts of the same size. If you are lucky a left handed drill might unscrew it while you are drilling. If you drill all the way through it be aware that the Trans Fluid is going to come out on the Drill Motor and likely yourself. There might be a small possibility that it could be drilled out and tapped to another size.

Did you try unscrewing what is left? If the threads are not stripped, once the head is gone there isn't any tension on the bolt.
Use a small screw driver / very sharp center punch to turn the bolt. Do not use a right hand drill bit, the bolt may end up threading into the torque converter and bounce around with not so good results. The best broken bolt removal tools are made by Ridgid. They are a straight spline rather than the tapered easy out that ends up expanding the bolt making it more difficult to remove. And, the straight spline allows for turning the bolt in both directions to work rust out, something a tapered easy out can't do. |

I did not try removing it. Primarily because I need to get a new bolt first. As soon as the head broke, I didn't touch it any more. And said a few choice words. The threads should not be stripped. Thank you for the Ridgid recommendation. Really appreciate it! |
