I think I last bought G05 at Pep Boys, though I don't recall the cost (actually that's a reminder that I need to do the coolant flush again).

What is Orilies? Is it a local chain back in your part of the country? Does it have much in the way of euro-parts or just a generic place that only stocks the paper element oil filter instead of the fleece (and yep, that would be Pep Boys)?

If it has better hours than Napa, at least you'd only be paying the convenience charge if you ran into a jam and needed it right away. My nearest Napa has really awful hours, so for a few bucks if you couldn't wait it would be worth it.

O'Reilly is all over the place. They spread a lot when they bought up Checker/Kragen/Shucks/Murray's family of auto parts stores.

I go to them most often, because there is one just a half mile away. They actually seem to carry a fair number of parts. I got the correct air filter there for my '85 300D, Wix brand.

Often, though, they'll only have one of those parts on hand and it'll be "in the back". That's also where they keep the G05. In The Back.

The approved list is far outdated with the new oils available.

Majority of the cheaper coolants (green) are phosphate free. Changing it every two years on time and you will be fine.

Oh, okay, I certainly know O'Reilly's, but the phonetic spelling threw me off.

I grew up in Phoenix, and in Arizona that part of the chain was named "Checker Auto Parts." In CA when I moved here it was Kragen, in some parts of the country it was Schucks, all of which were pieces of CSK, which was purchased by O'Reilly's about 8 or ten years ago.

It's not just being phostphate-free. It's also about having the correct additive package, including nitrites and other cavitation protection. See the chart below, note that Zerex is one of the only that has a Nitrite additive, and note the asterisk about diesel engines and nitrites.

You also mention that conventional coolant needs to be changed every 2 years. Zerex is good for 5. How is it better to change a coolant that only costs half as much, more than twice as often?

Just because they say 5 years doesn't mean it is true. I do two years depending on how much driving. Three years is just as good as well.

I use the GO-5 in everything, makes it simple. Change it when I think about it.

Did a Google search on how long is antifreeze good for, interesting reading the different forums as to the opinions. some good wife tales LOL.

That's a really useful set of FAQ, as well as the link to recycling. Too many people just dump it in the environment, and that's not a good thing. Thanks for posting that information.

The O'Rielly's down the street has 1 or 2 jugs of Zerex G-05 in the back usually. I just call before hand, ask them to get eyes on it, and then I go down to buy it. It's like $17 there, $18 at NAPA (which is also clear across town) and the dealer doesn't carry yellow Zerex anymore. They have the new blue coolant.
