Fairbanks-Morse (OIL) diesel engine 1920's TREAT for you all

Hey guys, something to take your mind off MB diesels for a few min. I shot this Vid. while at the world famous Coolspring Power Museum, North of Pittsburgh PA. back in '11. The engine belongs to my friend. Back in the early days Diesel engines were NOT called Diesel engines, BUT, OIL ENGINES! They basically had a HUGE glow plug that you would heat with a torch till the cylinder got hot enough to fire the Cyl. under very heavy compression. They weren't easy to start, BUT they were work horses once you got them going. I hope you guys enjoy, since your into diesels like myself! I have a couple other neat hit and miss engines under my channel, and a model of one of the very first commercial engines ever invented, called an Otto-Langen, atmosphere. Hold onto yourself, these Vids will take you into another world of where engines started, and if the bug bites you, you'll be scared for life... :0) here is the link...cheers, Frank in VA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqMVfiR8fXo

Interesting just wondering what the power to weight ratio would be?

Cool, thanks for posting that. I believe Fairbanks-Morse still has their head office in Norfolk Va. They sold allot of engines to the Navy. The last job I had before retirement was delivering an X navy YTB tug from Norfolk to Seattle. It had a two cycle, 2000 HP, "OP" Fairbanks-Morse, twenty pistons in ten cylinders. As I remember it turned up around 900 RPMs. A fine old engine, wish I had taken more pics of it.

Another attraction at Coolspring. Not a diesel, but fascinating to watch. It was in service for 77 years before being decommissioned and donated to Coolspring. Coolspring Power Museum 2014 - 600 HP Snow Gas Compressor Engine - YouTube

For you gents in the Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa area, there's a steam threshing show that happens in Sycamore, IL ever August. I've been going since I was a kid. There were a TON (pun intended) of Morse engines along with steam, diesel and gassers. Steam powered saw mill, wheat threshing and corn shucking. home
