Another Road Trip, another Flatbed breakdown AGAIN!!!!!
 

81 from it's northern most start to New Orleans and back all the way to Bristol TN before the front driver's side wheel bearing went out without warning. Flatbedded to Rick Hill Imports a Mercedes dealership. I find out tomorrow when they can get the parts. Looks like the bearing is fused to the spindle, not fun and no warning!!

When was the last time the front wheel bearings were serviced?

Fronts 3 years ago. Rears never.

I always check for play when I rotate and when I do seasonal snow / summers they were always tight and noise free.

Obviously not serviced enough.

How many miles are on the vehicle? The one being parted out has 200k.

Some 606s I know of still had the factory hatching at 300K miles. So yes, hardly broken in. Where are you located if selling is the plan?

Maybe someone put a Chinese replacement bearing on that front axle at one time. I had to prove to myself just how bad some of them are unfortunately.

Fooled me a few years ago. I have seen them fail in very little time and miles with the worse ones.

Parts are in and installed $$$$$

They couldn't get the speed sensor off to transfer over to the new part so I have no cruise control, BAS SRS and ABS lights on the dash.

They also examined the passenger's side and found it as now. It was repacked and we are on the way.

Driving without cruise gives poorer mpgs in my case.

Man, this thread and some others lately concerning the late 90's 300d's has gotten me to really think about not getting one. Shame bc im in the market for a new-to-me diesel preferably a mercedes after enjoying the 124 for about 10 months. Sorry for your troubles edbso. Hope it all works out in the end and no more road trip gremlins.

Thats a bummer. The farthest I have driven any of my old MB's is from Delaware to Allentown, PA in my 300TE. It didn't have any issues at all but the long trip did cause the sidewalls of my tires to start cracking :eek: When it has new tires I wouldn't think twice about driving it anywhere.

Indeed. I did Carson City, NV to Miami and back in my 300D without incident. I also did CCNV to ATL and back in my old 240D, but I did end up having to swap a starter halfway through. Keeping the pedal to the floor pretty much all the way from Kansas to Salt Lake wasn't exactly fun either.

6600 mile trip in e300 and Repacking/monitoring bearings?
 

I just got back from a long road trip with the e300 that was 6600 miles from OH to OR and back. I tried to get all the PM done prior to trip and the car performed really well.

I was a little concerned when we drove from southern OR to Utal and had to pass through a delolate area that lasted 350 miles. We only saw three other vehicles and one small town with a gas station. I was thinking about belts and bearings a little during that time.

I will say that the left front area is now rumbling at a low level when I turn to the left so I am going to check and see if the bearing is bad. It starting doing this when I was doing switchbacks out in the Western US in the Badlands of SD and Glacier Park, MT. The sounds would go away when I straightened the car out.

Checking and repacking the bearings is a good idea periodically.....anyone have a service frequency on the W123, W124s? W210? and W211s. I think it may not be a bad idea to at least pull the caps and make sure the grease is adequate in quantity and quality on an annual basis? Repack every 2 years? Can the rear bearings be repacked?

Installed new speed sensor, and plastic guard (that came directly from Germany) and I still have BAS SRS and ABS lights on the dash.

My OBD2 reader shows no codes and even when reset to clear. The BAS SRS and ABS lights are still on.

Is this something that has to be reset by the dealer only? Or how can I reset it? Could it be that the be Bosch sensor is bad?

I have tried the steering wheel reset. Hard left and hold for a couple of seconds then hard right and hold a bit and nothing changes
