Smile 1980 Mercedes 300SD

I would like the benefit of your experience and "non-emotional" dollars and sense about the possible purchase of a clean one-owner 1980 300 SD with 193,000 miles. California car but asking $12,500. I have an emotional reason for wanting to put one in my stable, but I need your help to find out what a fair price is for this type of car.

Thanks in advance for your time and "non-emotional" advice!

Dave Wheeler

Cut the price in half and it's still a lot.

Did you mean asking $1250? or maybe $2500?

This car with this many indicated miles at this age is going to need THOUSANDS of dollars to get in highway condition...

However, if it's all been done with quality parts, it may be worth it.
Condition is important, but RECORDS are the deciding factor.

For that price you should expect half the mileage (or less), one owner, garaged and in mint cosmetic and mechanical condition with a very thick, complete file of service records and needing nothing.

For rough comparison purposes, one of the members of the Facebook Mercedes Diesels group was selling his w116 300sd in immaculate condition, lots of work done and upgrades including IIRC fully rebuilt seats with new seat covers (a major issue with w116s). About the same mileage, maybe a bit more. From a no-rust state.

Again IIRC, I did not pay close attention to it, he had started at $6,500 and was at $5,500 with no bites, last time I saw his listing.

There is always some guy with an overpriced diesel Mercedes for sale.

NADA values for Condition 1 and 2 cars can go up that high, but it really needs to be immaculate and needing nothing to be worth that much.

I've seen these cars go for over 10k in not to distant past but the milage was less than 50k not almost 200.

In order to fetch that type of money, it would need to be under 100K miles, be garaged and perfect in every way down to no door dings the like. It would need to have a full maintenance history with rubber recently replaced and no oil leaks. The interior would also have to be perfect without a cracked dash and the A/C fully working strong on all vents. All of the little details would need to be correct. In short, it would be in the top 1% of all W116 300SDs on the road.

I disagree...

this price is not out of line for a GREAT daily driver with zero rust, and in very good repair with full maintenance history, that includes everything suspension...

a w116 in the condition you describe would likely be in the upper 20K range...

keep in mind the current price for a mcKrappy import is upper 30K...

Then I suppose we'll have to disagree. I live in California and I have seen a bunch of W116s for sale like you describe for under $10K and having a hard time selling.

Would they do better in Europe or in the rust belt? Probably, but not here.

Take a look at Mercedes Motoring for some of the cars that sell for $15K and up.

Oh I'm sure of that. My point is with proper maintenance and records it should be worth it for the car
