front wheel noise
My 190D has a scraping and sometimes chirping noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. Started out as a whistle but turned into scraping. This happens after I drive the car about 3 miles and it can come and go. I changed the wheel bearing, no change. Today, I jacked up the car and turned the tire. I hear a intermittent rubbing sound but still don't know the cause.

Did you check the brake pads for thickness and even wear?

I'd check for a bent dust shield.

The brake pads look pretty good. If it was the dust shield wouldn't it make the noise all the time?

If the dust shield is just barely rubbing, expansion of the rotor can make contact. Even turning the steering wheel can flex things just enough to make contact.

Brake Pads do not wear evenly all of the time and sometimes look good when you look at one section of them and not if you pull the Pad out. In any event this sort of thing generally calls for safely jacking up the front end and checking stuff. Then noises aren't always coming from the area that you think the sound is coming from when you listen while driving; very frustrating!

Just one wheel bearing? There are 2 bearings making a total of 4 pieces per wheel.
Spin the wheel, listen for noise. Look at the back of dust shield, maybe pull it back a bit, spin wheel, any change? If not: Pry the brake pads back a bit listen for noise Pull the pads out . . Remove the caliper. . . Remove the rotor and look for scrape marks. If the dust shield is rubbing it will make lots of noise. Some rubbing is normal if you are close up, but if you can hear it while driving, something is wrong. |
