Sure a lot of worry over a small bit of old ATF left hanging in the Tran after a drain.

Warm up the transmission, warm oil drains best.
Drain the pan, drain the Convertor, remove the pan, wash it out, (I use gas to wash it out)
then use spray carb cleaner to flush it clean and air dry.
Do not use a rag or paper towel to wipe it clean, you get lint into the trans.
Replace the Filter.
Do not wipe of the ATF dripping off the bottom of the trans. Remember....lint.
Replace pan with new gasket.
Be sure to replace both drain plugs, and with a new copper washer.
Add proper amount of ATF. think my 85 held like 6 qts, add 5, warm up the trans, then add
the 6ts qt a little at a time till you get it up to the fill line...hot.

I think I had something like 360K on my auto before I swapped in the 4-spd manual.

correct.

I'm not sure what year MB deleted the rear pump, I think the 93's still have it. 95 May... but I am not sure.

my 1995 does not have a rear pump, it was deleted by MB in 1993 I think.

but its very easy to change ATF on this 722.4 - drain the sump, drain the torque converter, change filter, install sump, tighten correctly to 70 in/lb, fill a gallon of ATF in there, let it sit 10 minutes to soak up the new filter, start engine, pour remaining ATF in there, adjust level to dead cold mark.

I have found my 1995 shifts best with an ATF that claims to perform like Dex III-H or mercon V. Smooth yet positively strong shifts, anything else makes it bite into gear too hard.

Yes I think the change from 722.3 to 722.4 deleted the rear pump. Or maybe late in the 722.3 run.

123/126 and early 124s have 722.3s. 124s at the end of the run went to .4s

The rear pump allows tow starting and also would let you circulate the fluid by rotating the rear wheel.

In my experience just replacing the filter and fluid (drain tc) has proven successful 100% of the time.It matters more how frequently in my opinion ,I just simply do the service once a yr on anything I daily drive. The success goes to how many trannies Ive had to lower ,which to date is zero .What does tend to put a 617 / trannie on the side yard is the b2 piston leaking at seal (no forward gears) or vacuum box (no 2nd 3rd or 4th gear shift),these are both a very doable diy project which Im in process with right now on a 300sd and another 300cd.If you like to experience no issues with these very finely built transmissions just baby them like you do your 617s.

most 85W123's got the .4 as did the 190D's... My 87 190D TURBO has the .4, and I wonder if it has the rear pump or not... the original transmission went out, and I swapped in one from my 93 parts car. so that one will not have the rear pump, but my baby 87 turbo 190D will likely still have the original trans...

what type of transmission fluid do our cars use? with my jeep there was a big deal which type, ie dextron 2, 3, or 4 etc. Chrysler released a technical service bulletin saying ALL of their transmissions were able to use the newer dextron 6, saying they were backwards compatible. turns out, chrylser didn't make the jeep transmissions, aisin warner did. lots of people ruined their transmissions. even though the drain plug was stamped with "dex II"

im guessing what is labeled "ATF" is what we use?

btw, for the firearm aficionados, if you mix equal parts of atf, mineral spirits and acetone together you have the worlds best and cheapest gun cleaner.

Some rebuilders leave out the rear pump.

The Caravan (ATF+4) and Suburban (Dex VI) don't have TC drains so they get the flush and fill. The effluent looks like new stuff after about 8 quarts so that's where I call it. Aside from flowing out faster than you can pour through the dipstick tube, there's a good amount of discharge after you cut the engine depending on how you route the discharge hose. Plan and measure accordingly.

I get the sense a 722.3/4 will run on anything a 616/7 will burn. I've heard of them running well on Dex II, Dex III, Dex VI, Allison Transynd, Swepco 714, BG Syncro Shift... My dearly departed '87 300D ran nicely on BG Syncro Shift synthetic. It was cool to see blue fluid on the end of the dipstick
