Exclamation W124 87 td unintended acceleration?!?

I was driving my 87 td wagon the other day, and the gas pedal started to sink to the floor and the car started accelerating (relatively slowly). I hit the brake, and the pedal popped back up. This has happened a few times more since then. I think it must be the cruise control, since pushing the cruise control stick forward also causes the pedal to pop back up.

I had never tried the cruise control before, but I think it probably never worked. It doesn't do anything now, unless this problem is happening.

This is obviously unacceptable, especially since my 16 year old daughter drives the car. I don't really care about the cruise control. If I just unplug the amplifier will it disable the system?

Is there some sort of throttle actuator that I can physically disconnect, or does it work via the electrical connection to the injection pump?

Thanks for any input..

Max Behensky

I would start with unplugging the actuator, and if that doesn't work, unhook the linkage.

Check to see if your accelerator pedal says "Toyota"

Hi, and thanks for the input.

I decided to unplug the actuator rather than the amplifier, in case there was some fault in the wiring harness causing the problem. I looked at my extra motor and figured the actuator had to be the big thing rearward of the injection pump with a throttle link to it and a thick multi pin cable coming out of it. This also matched a picture I found on EBay. I unplugged the cable, and I'll see if the problem recurs.

Thanks,

Max Behensky
