Cool CRAIGSLIST SCORES!

Well my brother sorta hit the jackpot twice this week with Craigslist. He's always had better luck than me, my 190D ended up being a money pit (which I still love), but his 300SD has been a great car and is worth almost 3 times what he paid for it, plus his parts car was better than my parts car and the Sportline he found for me was also a steal.

So this week he made two purchases for a total of $150.

The first was a guy's collection of W123 and a few W124 parts that he was selling because he sold his W123. I've got some pictures which includes everything except a pair of palomino sunvisors that were in excellent shape.

This really is awesome for my bro. He needed the engine shocks for his 300SD, that's $42 right there. It only has one engine mount mounting kit but that's $145 from Pelican. I'm not sure if the rear axle boots are compatible with the 300SD but they are PEX (good quality) and if anything they will work on the 240D, which also needs them. It also had 21 lug bolts for the "steelie" rims which is what Thomas needed for the CLK rims that he is currently running cause the bolts he has on there are in terrible shape and these, while used, are in great shape. It also had a brand new shutoff valve, $170 from Pelican, which seems to be going bad on his car. Another thing was a very clean Hirschmann antenna, which is bad on his car. Saves us around $120.

Among the other items is a new fuel tank cap, a new Bosch relay for something which sells for around $300, washer tank, two washer pumps, a Mercedes tool set (not complete but mostly there), a few new dealer parts, a good yellow foglight, and some other random odds and ends.

Also two radios, should probably get around $100 or so for them on ebay.

Next was a purchase he made for $100. This was a set of 15 inch Centra type 31 rims with almost new Cooper tires. The chrome finish on the rims is terrible and peeling off but there is no curb rash and all four center caps were included along with the special key for the center caps. Quite often you will find set missing center caps, the key, or both. The guy we bought them from had recently bought an 84 300D (which was extremely clean) and put some clean bundts on it. These are not the most desirable of the type 31 being 15 inch instead of 16 inch but should be great for my 190D when it is reshelled into a white body, or the 240D until then because the tires are close enough to the size the 240D needs and Coopers are much better than whatever Chinese tires it had on it when we bought it.

great score!

is that a NEW fan clutch???

the boots are great quality, but are useless to the average owner unless they have the bolt together axles.

Good find, some times you luck out on CL.

I have a set of the Centra`s in 16 inch, also the center caps, but no key.
I think a couple of the stars are missing,

My best score, is a MB Spring Compressor, brand new, never used, for.....$75.

The fan clutch looks like it is used but good shape. It's very tight but it seems like it may be leaking oil. I don't really have any use for it seeing as we put an electric fan on my bro's 300SD.

I assume for my brother's axles that we will have my mechanic do them or have my friend take the car down to his automotive school and they will do it there. New axles are rather expensive for a W116.

That's a great score. On a related note, last week we picked up a nice like new waterproof car cover that fit my bro's car (it has leaking windows and it has been raining a lot here) for $11 and a complete model kit of an aircraft carrier worth about $120 for $5 at a local Goodwill.

Only an axle rebuilder with access to a can press can use those boots.

There are tons of these cars tooling around. In some parts of Atlanta, there are as many old Mercedes as Camrys and the like.

I guess I shall have to seek out such a shop or find some good quality rebuilt axles.

Now my question is can I use flex seal on axles boots to keep the grease from escaping?
