Strange trunklid wiring oddity

Hey folks,

Going thru my new to me W211 2005 cdi, one of the problems on it was the two license plate lights didn't work, put in new bulbs and one works but the other doesn't.

Did some reading and read about the wiring issue with W211's at the hinge so started re-wiring everything with new wire. Part way through I took a close look behind the plate lights and discovered it wasn't plugged in!

Ok so I investigated more and found a random un-used connector which is not plugged into anything. However it DOES NOT fit the light!

So now I'm stuck, I have a missing plate light connector and I don't see any hacked or cut/missing wires where it used to be anywhere, but instead I have an extra connector that seems to go nowhere.

I should add the plate light connector that is there has 2 wires (power and ground) like you'd expect, but the other connector has 3.

This first post I will attach the photo of the plate light connector that IS there and works.

Here is the odd connector that seems to go nowhere.

I can post all the wiring colors tomorrow (sunday) when I can go take a look. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this part of the car?

Thanks everyone and I hope someone can help me figure this out, BTW I think someone changed the trunk lid at some point or seems to have been in there before.

So I did some more investigation and traced the harness back to the plug on the main distribution outlet, it had the part no. 211-440-32-06 on it.

Can anyone confirm this is the correct part? I made a note of all the wires on the plug end and their colors and matched them to the plugs at the end of the harness for the various points.

It all matches up. I did discover that the plug I thought was unknown was actually the emergency release for the inside of the trunk (doah).

So I'm still scratching my head, its like the second light socket and wire has VANISHED and there is no trace of it???

Still perplexed

Trying to find a shop/repair manual for this car is not proving fruitful

Best I managed today was a C class haynes manual and grabbed some shots of the schematic for that (attached). Layout is similar but the wires are different colors. There are certain TWO light connectors with different wires for each.

Thinking I might have to call Benz tomorrow and see what they can do.

Connector

Hey folks, here is a pic of the main connector that plugs into the trunk box on the car, the PIN 20 the grey and black wire is the right hand side plate light, I had an idea how I can fix this but I need to know the pin number for the left hand side light.

I can try and guess it but might end up shorting something out, want to avoid that.

Can anyone help?

Fixed!

Very simple fix....(feel kinda stupid).

Someone had jammed the second light connector into a space on the door lock, weird because it was as if there was a space for it but no electrical connections there.

I found some useful links for diagrams during my searching on google which I will post below in case anyone needs them:
