sensors in head om617

Connecting everything back to a rebuilt head on my 85 wagon. There are two ports in the passenger side at the front for screw in fittings. I have no idea what goes into these ports.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ac26qmxhmvqsfq5/2015-05-31%2010.31.20.jpg?dl=0

At the rear of the head on the passenger side are the heater hose fitting and the temp gauge sensor.

On the thermostat are two screw in electrical connections, one appears to be a switch and the other a sensor.

I have the engine manual for om617.95 but cannot find the proper page describing the forward two port connections. Does anyone recall what they are? I'm guessing more temp sensors, but I have no idea what for. I have a couple of sensors in the box, but one must be the gauge sender, which leaves me with an open hole.

Thanks,
Karl

OK, maybe one is for the auxillary fan switch?

Part # 006-545-14-24

I don't seem to have one of these in the bucket of removed parts.

The other

is for the thermo-vac switch for the egr valve. Mine is blocked off with a brass pipe plug since I have deleted the egr. I recommend you do the same unless needed to pass emission testing.

This is a friendly reminder of just how valuable BEFORE pics can be.

Both are temp switches.

Does it look like this, both are the same.

Part# 005-542-26-17

As rocky raccoon mentioned, one is for the EGR and one for the water temp gauge.

They don't both look the same

The thermo-vac switch has vacuum connections on it.

Thanks very much to all. Except the picture guy. OK even him.

Will see what I can come up with. I do have two sensors like that in the box. But there are three holes total. Maybe I have have a switch somewhere too.

Will post a follow up. Need some sealing rings I guess.

Both of the Temp switches on my 85 300D Head are like the one I posted.

The thermo-vac switch would be on the Thermostat housing as I remember how my 85 "Use to be".

Yes I appear to have two temp sensors in the box. They are slightly different but probably identical functionally. Do these require sealing rings? I'm sure the appropriate wires to hook to them will become apparent. I think the thermo vacation was gone by 1985; I have an electric switch and an electric sensor on the thermostat but no vacuum lines.

Slowly getting her back together in the evenings; ordering new gaskets, seals and the occasional rusted bolt. I am putting it all back together with some corrosion inhibitor to avoid twisting anything off; one fuel filter bracket bolt refused to budge. Duralac is what I use on boats so it should do the trick.

one of those sensors is for the coolant temp on the dash, and the other is an input to the glow plug relay so it knows how long to turn the glow plugs on for. the seal ring part # 007 603 01 41 00

Thanks that's very helpful. I figured it had to be a temp input for some other random thing. I may even have the sealing ring in the gasket kit I bought for it. (That Victor Reinz kit didn't have an SLS pump gasket, or a thermostat-to-head gasket, or a sealing ring for the timing chain tensioner plug, or the tensioner-to-head gasket - I mean, who would need any of those when changing a head, right?) I can't believe I am ordering all this stuff piecemeal.

They say the tensioner plug sealing ring takes 1.5 weeks to ship! Kind of silly. If I knew dimensions I would just buy one from amazon, but it seems like thickness may be critical.

I bought an Elring set when I did my last head gasket and I believe it came with all those seals, made in Germany too. You may consider it if you ever end up doing this job again. I will see if I can find the dimensions of the ring for you...
