1982 W123 Master cylinder leaking out the top when bleeding under pressure
What do you do about the brake fluid leaking out the top when under pressure?

One answer is not to pressure bleed. See post number 9 and the picture.
Motive power brake bleeder not usable on W124 (1987 300D)?

Yeah... I just don't pressure bleed my W123s. They often cause more issues than it's worth because of this very thing.
Your choices are to replace the rubber grommets on the MC and hope that fixes it, or just pivot to a different bleeding method such as vacuum bleeding. |

OK, my cap on top of the master cylinder was not tightened tight enough. The cap that came with the Motive fits the master cylinder fits, but it has a different feel to it. I just needed to tighten it more. (Dumb mistake)
Once I figured that out, it took me a full 5 minutes to bleed both front calipers. Since I only replaced the front calipers, I'm assuming the rears are fine. Am I wrong? Last edited by gregp1962; 03-28-2024 at 03:49 PM. |

Fine as in no air?... probably. They should be bled anyway as maintenance to keep the brake fluid free of corrosion causing moisture. If the rears were flushed recently and none of the lines were touched, front caliper work wouldn't impact them unless the MC reservoir was run dry/empty.

Reading through this post and one linked, sound like
it is a maintenance issue, not the pressure bleeder is the problem. When I used the Motive on the 80 and 85, didn`t have any issues. Flushing the Brake System is one of the most neglected maintenance items on vehicles. Charlie

Thanks VSTECH, I wondered that also.
Another feature that would be nice is, when you click back into a thread, it always puts you back to post#1, and you have to then scroll down to where you last read. Another Forum Iam on, it takes you back to where you left off. Charlie
