Vacuum pump?

Just picked up a 74 240d. Brakes are very hard but do opperate. I looked at my vacuum pump and saw the front cover looked like it had broken off. However diaphragm looks to be intact. Pulled off the booster hose and am getting alot of vacuum. Is it operating correctly and just have a bad cap? Looks like it was blown off.

Snap a photo and post if you can. If the cover is off I'd think you'd be pouring out oil.

Your pump is the earlier one w/ rubber diaphragm. In mine, there is a vacuum cavity under that cap, so without it I don't think I would get any vacuum. I would get another vac pump at the junkyard. The pump can fail in ways that will damage your timing chain and possibly ruin the whole engine.

Don't drive it anymore like that. You could kill the engine. You need a new one.
