Broke hood hinge pin 85 300SD

Today after doing some work under the hood when I went to close the hood I heard something pop and could see quickly the driver side of hood mount bracket was wobbly and the hood would not close. On closer inspection I could see the main pin was broke it was riveted on from the factory. What I had to do was take off the plastic inner fender guard from underneath so I could get at the 4 (10 mm.) nuts holding the hood bracket on. I was able to fabricate a pin out of a bolt and can now close the hood. If possible could I buy the proper pin and rivet it on or would I have to buy the whole hood bracket with it already riveted on. The pin is 1" in length and is like a shoulder bolt the one part being 14mm. and the other part being 10mm. Have attached pictures of the pin.

Unfotunately yours broke off in a different place. This is what I did to mine. I drilled it down the center and tapped and threaded it for a Bolt with washer.

Used JB-Weld on the Bolt so it would not back out.

In your case you would need either a bunch of washers to replace the stepped machined area or simply use fat bolt with washer.

What is tough would be drilling down the center and holding the little piece of metal while you tap it.

Thanks for the replies yes mine did break in a spot rendering useless Im glad I can take my time in finding another as the repair I made might last the car. Strange that all the other pins come out and have a clip on the end of them but not this main one had to be rivited and also 2 different diameters on the pin shaft. I used a metric bolt that fit the one 10mm diameter and then put a bushing in the 14mm side put a nut on cut the bolt on both ends because of the space factor thin, it will hold for awhile. Yes those pins were in bad need of lube the one that broke was froze and I do not know for how long had to use heat on it to get it out it was fused so tight.

Lubrication causes a lot of failures in these old MBs. Door checks, door locks, window regulators, hood hinges, wheel bearings, etc.

It's nice you were able to bandaid it, but a new hinge is the way to go. Lubricate the pivots with ATF.

What happend on mine (courtsey of the Prior Owner/s) is that the drains on the pockets where the hinge retracts into were plugged causing Water to pool inside of those pockets leading to rust.

Those are the vents that come out under the fenders. Compressed Air blow upwards into the vents blew out all kids of crud.

In fact the pockets on mine rusted to the extent water leaked into the side of the car and rusted out the spot on the sheetmetal where the lowest Hood Hinge pivots.
