If and when I get a wheel off, I could certainly order a couple of these in and see if they are even correct. Thing is, the folks that rebuild these, don't Know if they fit the right car for sure. I have seen this many times, from both sides of the counter. Some how, the application gets screwed up, or there is a mix-up at the rebuilders, I don't know. They've got the wrong calipers in the right box. Seems more common on these splitable calipers rather than later, when you can see the differences more clearly. There like 6 of us W123/W126s here in town, and Rogviler and I are the only ones that wrench on our cars, save another fella that never waves back when I see him. |

Not sure if I can trust them, they want my old ones, too. |
Strange, what I got was the real deal....ATE.
I still have the boxes the Calipers came in, I`ll check tomorrow to see if the part # are on them. Are these calipers for your 79 240 or your 91 300E? What state are you in? Maybe NAPA`s in other states get their parts from various vendors? IDK. Charlie |

I live in Hawaii - TIA for the info. |
Got a "reman" that fit my 240D
The "reman" front caliper I just put on my '79 fit OK.
When I opened the box I looked for ATE and found nothing, there wasn't even a star on the casting. It is possible that someone somewhere is making "new" castings by first coating the original caliper halves with foundry wax. If they use too much, the general dimensions would be loo large. Perhaps a mis-calculation in shrink. Most of the wax should be added to the surfaces that will be machined where the caliper halves join. If a lot of cores are not rebuildable due to issues like stripped threads for the brake hose attachment, or the bleeder attachment point, perhaps it is more economical for them to just re-cast the entire part. I rolled the dice when I found a site with geeks running it offering a reman ATE caliper for $58 and change. The existing caliper wasn't releasing, so I replaced the OLD hose and caliper. Now I can spin the wheel. Couldn't move it by hand before. I know, DON'T CHANGE ONLY ONE SIDE AT A TIME, but the car brakes fine, no pull, and I can remove my hands from the steering wheel and the car goes straight on down the road. I even detected a speed increase on a hill I climb on the way to town, I usually slow to 52.5, but now I am at 54.5. This is a 240D. Anything that legitimately adds the illusion of "speed" is a good thing!:D I am debating on whether I should send in my core or keep it to rebuild myself. It has both ATE on it as well as the star. Perhaps rebuilding might be the best choice for me since it can be a gamble out there in caliper land. Since this is my daily driver, I do not want to play "caliper roulette" and have the car out of service until I get lucky and get one that fits. This car must be ready to go when we need it. Update: One caliper had to be returned because the bolt on the bottom holding the two halves together was not secure. Napa replaced the bolt. Hope the other side does not have the same issue. Guess time will tell.
So they fit fine, and work well. Part numbers were: SE 1725 and SE 1726. They had the ate and mbz stamps on them. |
