84 SD, EGR removed...

the hole it exposed is full of crud. Do we think it needs cleaning out or just leave it alone?

Also, although the air filter doesn't look bad the inside of the cage it fits around is covered with oil. What's shall I do to stop the oil residue there?

Thanks to Rollguy for the kit, it's perfect.

The oil doesn't matter if the EGR is blocked (as it should be). The oil is only an issue when it combines with the soot from the EGR to from the crud you see. Unless you plan on removing the entire intake manifold and cleaning it I would't bother\worry about it.

Clean the EGR ports, function tests the EGR with a mityvac, and reinstall everything.

Dear lord man, what is your obsession with the EGR on these cars? It has been proven that they clog up the intakes on these cars as well as reduce performance. After removing mine my emissions test didn't change one bit.... and yes, I know you will say that its technically illegal to remove it, but to date I have not heard one person say they had issue with some inspecting it. It just doesn't happen....

It doesn't lose much oil. I change it around 3000 miles and never have to add oil. Can this somehow be linked to the oil I'm seeing beneath the turbo?

I was going to say something, but it would probably get me banned...suffice it to say, do what you want, stay under the radar and ignore the hypocrites and tree-huggers.

Possible, but its much more likely that your turbo drain seals are leaking.. Although oil from blow by (which is what you see inside your intake) can accumulate and drip out of the air filter housing in some cases.

I actually consider myself to be on the environmental side of the fence than most and I'm fine with it. On these cars I seriously doubt the EGR makes ANY difference.. I too wasn't going to say anything, but if no one says anything you end up with a lot of one sided miss information... and then things start to go down hill towards how Forced Inductions's (Zeddon some forums) posts used to be... It just doesn't lead to a good exchange of information..

ANYWAYS, back to the thread at hand. I would't worry about a coating of oil in the intake, its normal, and like I said, with the EGR disabled its now harmless as far as crud build up goes.

Coating of oil in the air cleaner could also be a leaky oil separator goober.

I can't recall the exact name for it, but someone should chime in with more info.

I've had oil residue in both my 82s air cleaner areas until I disassembled, cleaned and rtv-ed the cyclone separator things top back on.

You can't advocate for something illegal while in good conscious. EGRs do make a difference when properly maintained like any other part of the vehicle. I'd like my children's children to have a nice planet to live on.

So, the OP should clean and test the components, and reinstall. THAT is relevant to the thread.

And yet somehow I tell everyone on here to remove them and I still sleep like a baby. I will forever advocate removing the EGR on these cars. And for the record, laws have nothing to do with having a conscious.

A good point, my 300SD had a leak where the oil separator connected to the solid drain line that does to the oil pan. There is an o-ring there that could leak as well. My issue was that the solid line kept falling off of the air-oil separator.

There are a few leak points in this area it could be. If you want to track t down cleaning the area with a solvent first then seeing where the oil leak re appears is the best method to track down the leak.

I appreciate the help and advise.

I do not care for the arguments over political topics. It's possible some won't contribute their opinion on my issues to avoid the political tripe on this thread.
