Smile Auto Shifting Concerns

First I would like to say that I was able to fix all of my vacuum door lock troubles with the help of the members on this site. This type of forum is invaluable !

My question is regarding the shifting habits of my transmission. I just recently acquired a 1980 300D, and when I drive on level ground, here is what is does: 1st gear seems normal, and then shifts to 3rd, then downshifts to 2nd. It only does this sometimes. Other times it seems to rev higher when shifting to 3rd. Once is in third, it goes on forever. The shifting also is hard, especially compared to my Chevy. When I have the car on the highway, it just loves to be driven, it just doesn’t seem to like the stop & go driving. I am trying to get the hang of the car, I am just wondering if I should take the car to a shop for an adjustment.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Robert
