Vacuum pump interchangeability question

Hey all,

I am swapping an OM617a into my '79 240D. I had a question regarding the vacuum pumps.

Can I swap the vacuum pump from my OM616 (that was working well when my 240D ran last) onto the OM617 engine I'm rebuilding? It looks like it would bolt up, but I haven't pulled the vacuum pump from my old engine yet.

Thanks
Max

I am not 100% sure, but I think the old style pump cam was different...

Yes, it is possible to swap. But early style and late one pumps are different in size thus early and late engines have different pulley geometry. When you interchange pumps check for clear space between power steering pump's belt and vac pump body.
IIRC it is possible to replace later style pump with early one and not vice versa.
