I had 2 oil filters in my car

Hi, I have a 1980 240D

While changing the oil filter, I found 2 oil filters in the cannister. A small one on the bottom, and a larger one stacked on top of it.

I ordered additional filters from an online site and a short one came in the mail.
It does not fill the size of the cannister.

The filter I had left over from a 1983 300D fits perfectly.

Not sure what is up.???
