Dan:

If, in the future, you need to match a flywheel balance/imbalance, I can provide a factory style dual mandrel.

Thanks guys. Are the 280 clutch/flywheel assemblies commonly available or are they in the "hen's teeth" category? At least here in the US it seems like these cars would have come with automatics as luxoboats tend to do. I'd like to pick up the whole setup as a backup - I can check out the balance when I have the current flywheel off. Good to know that there is at least a chance for a bigger clutch.

Dan

Dan, sorry I assumed too much. I was referring to the 280e (E indicates a gas fuel injected car) which was built in the 123 chassis from about 1978 to about 1984 if you include the euro models. The 107 chassis (two seater) also came with that motor in Europe. I bought a flywheel for the 280 from a yard in Arizona or one of those western states...it was from an SL.

The pp and disc are available from the factory, at least they were ten years ago or so.

Rarity? Hens teeth? not sure....probably slightly more common than the fabled 123 chassis five speed.

I sold one a couple of years ago to a fellow who I don't think was using them so you might be able to flush him out with a want to buy ad.

Thanks, Frank & Tom. My Mercedes ignorance knows only slight bounds though I'm becoming familiar with the OM617 in spite of myself.

The wallet is still a bit on fire so I'll have to wait for a 280 clutch but I will keep my ear to the tracks and see what turns up. I can get a groovy friction disc in 9" so I should be able to make a gorilla connection with the bigger clutch. I was a bad boy and tried the BMW disc arrangement on the street in front of the house - seems OK. I'm heading to the dyno after lunch so we'll see if it stays hooked up at full rack. Also hope for HP numbers.

Cool! You also might be able to turn down your flywheel to make a 9" fit.

Dan:

As noted above, and in another thread of yours, your existing flywheel can be remachined to accept a larger clutch. Some of the mass that would be cut from the flywheel will return with the pressure plate of larger diameter, including the single plane "BMW" type.

Good point, Frank. You might enjoy the "No BS" post I just made. Clutch is good for now!

True.. with this custom machining, you can run the whole BMW pressure plate/friction disk package.
