M hand primer pump on OM605 engine?
Greetings, all
I have a W202 C250 Diesel with a OM605 engine. She's powerful, smooth and quiet (when her plastics aren't falling apart...). I do have one complaint, though: Replacing the diesel filter is a scary exercise. I'm pretty sure the previous starter was ruined in an attempt to prime the fuel system after replacing the filter. I typically replace the oil, oil filter and air filter, then I reverse her onto the ramps to elevate the fuel tank before replacing the fuel filter. The Euro-spec W123s sometimes came with M pumps rather than MW pumps. These pumps had hand primer pumps as well. So I'm thinking about installing such a primer pump onto my OM605. I'm also considering installing an electric fuel pump from a gasser, but I'm not sure that that has the pressure to prime the diesel system. What say you? Is there any reason why the OM605 will not work with a hand primer? Thanks

I would install an electric pump inline either below the tank or near the engine. They are cheap, reliable and depending on how you set if up can give you a performance boost. Most modern EFI gasoline pumps are overkill for ours cars. A diesel solenoid pump will do the job. It's also handy if you ever need to drain the tank or remove air bubbles from the system. On the w210/om606 the powerful lift pump tends to pull in air bubbles through various fuel line connections so adding some positive pressure near the tank aleviates that problem.
I'm using a Delphi fd0040 pump on my om603 and om606. It makes 12psi. I can switch it on manually or automatically over 2.5psi manifold pressure. ![]()
