OM603 timing chains

I am cleaning up a used OM603 912 for a customer. He Supplied a timing chain etc to be fitted but I see that when fitted correctly the cam timing is out 13 degrees after TDC. It seems as if the chain is 1/2 a link too long. As far as I can see,the head has never been off ,so neither head nor block have been machined.
Anyone come across this before? Are there different chains for the various OM 603's?
