300D Questions
Some say they have experienced engine problems on their 300D's. Is an engine going out usually from the neglect of the auto? There are some MB's in the classifieds, and they are cheap, but it seems you get what you pay for. I have a friend at my local MB dealer who always gets trade ins...says he can get me a good 300D for 2500 bucks. Have the techs check it out and all. What would be a better bet....through the dealer for a bit more money, or through classifieds? Also, what are some common problems on these. What is the basic life of the engine and tranny? Thanks

I would first try to work with the friend at the dealer that looks at the trade-ins. Have him call you when they get a good one in and then proceed from there. On the same hand it won't hurt to just start looking around at the classifieds, that way, you will at least know what is out there.

There is an '85 300D listed in the local paper. I called the lady and inquired. Excellent condition, 118,xxx miles or so, original owner, asking $6k. She said that some guy had already looked at it and told her he would bring a check today. I gave her my # and told her to call if she still has it Monday. Just talking with her and not seeing it yet I'll bet it is nice but it is slightly overpriced, IMHO.
