Diesel Grades
Can anyone tell me is there any difference between diesel and premium diesel? We have a local heating oil company offering premium diesel at a couple of pennies per gallon more than gas station diesel.

Texaco "premium diesel" has a cetane rating of 45-50
as posted by state law (Maryland) on the pump.

If you get a big jump in cetane ratings, it might be worth it to buy "premium" over "standard." However, in Michigan, you can't tell. There's no posting of cetane ratings and no uniformity in what is "premium" and what is not. Some stations (like Meijer) call all their diesel premium. If you ask guys at the station, they're generally clueless.

Premium has additives put in at the station tanks. Little known secret: Plain #2 or #1 is all the same stuff, with no changes in the pipeline. Water comes from slow moving stations. You pay for advertising. I buy the plain stuff and do my own additives. That way I know what I'm putting in my tank.
