Always a fun part of reassembly... and it's been 8 years since I took it apart, so... where does this shield-like thing go?

If it is, what does it attach to?

This is the shield that protects the starter from the heat of the engine/turbo. It is bolted to the side of the engine block right above the starter.

Left side of picture is where it goes.

Ooooh thank you; i better put it back on. This also explains where that clip goes where it is clipped to the heater line -- I was wondering about that clip in my 'left over after rebuild' parts pile as well...

(sorry for linking such a huge image; I just changed it to a much smaller attachment)

Finally installed it

The shield is finally in place.

Other than a few nuts and bolts this was the last major part in the "leftover parts bin" after reinstalling the engine+tranny.

I surmise that the purpose of this heat shield is to prevent the turbo+exhaust from cooking the battery. This is a very useful part!
