I've been using this in my 1995 E300 and 2005 E320 CDI. It is the current oil approved by MBNA for pre-particulate filter diesel vehicles (pre-2007). Since it is synthetic, I don't hesitate to run the full recommended mileage for the oil change interval when doing normal driving.
Mobil 1 0w40 is available in 5 quart jugs for $25.47 with delivery to your door from Amazon. With purchashes through 10/31, you can get a $12 rebate per 5 quarts with 10 quart limit. this is enough to do our individual cars: Mobil 1 0W40 $13.47 for 5 quart jug after rebate Here is link to rebate form: Mobil 1 Rebate Mobil 1 customer service confirmed that Amazon is included retailer but you need to include proof of shipment/delivery.

This oil is MB-229.3 and MB-229.5 spec. https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1
According to MB document S-0473-08B ("Factory Approved Service Products August 2007") which used to be posted at startekinfo.com but for some reason is no longer there, but I had a copy saved... 229.3/229.5 is approved for all pre 1997 diesel vehicles. I run this in the 1987 300TD and yes it's just about the same price at the redneck mall as Amazon. However not all Walmarts stock this oil in large quantity, so I've had to try several Walmarts to find it as my usual store was sold out when I had to get some recently. Starting in 1998, when they introduced the FSS Plus, they recommend 229.51 oil. This is the Mobil1 ESP Formula 0W-30. https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-esp All Diesels 1998 to present require 229.51 according to this document. This too is available from Amazon, it's only available by the liter, in a 6 pack case, runs $50/case. That works out to $8.33/liter which is the cheapest I've found it. Since my 98 and 08 take this oil, I have taken to ordering 3 cases and doing both cars at the same time. The 98 takes 8 L and the 08 takes 9 L (gotta fill up that *&^* oil cooler...). The extra liter came in handy to top off the ML as it leaked oil, hopefully I have cured this problem, so now I will have an extra liter left over. Still cheaper than buying 17 L at the FLAPS at around $12/13 a L full price or even $9/$10 on sale. As for the tax situation, some states (including SC) require that you declare all online purchases on your state tax return. We are required to pay the 8% tax (6% SC base + 2% Richland County local) on anything we did not pay tax on at the time of purchase. If I go into NC and buy something in person, I still have to declare it, but I get a credit against the 7.xx% NC tax paid, and have to pay the difference of 0.xx% to SC. Amazon thankfully started collecting SC tax on SC purchases so that I don't have to fool with this at tax time at least for Amazon. I get hit with this big time buying from Pelican. Just curious, you folks from TN/TX/FL/the other states with no state income tax, how does your state handle untaxed online purchases?

Also may be of interest, the M1 0W-40 ranked the highest of any oil that didn't have an additive in this oil wear test: https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/motor-oil-wear-test-ranking/ |

They're trying to change it, but it's ridiculously unpopular with businesses AND citizens of the state, so it's been stalled for years. We only pay Federal income tax, but as an offset we have some of the highest property and school taxes in the country.

0w40 M1 meets 229.5 which applies to CDI engines (Om648)
Quote:
0W40 meets MB-Approval 229.5 which applies to E320 CDIs from 2005 and 2006! I checked my service book! It certainly is excellent oil for ANY diesel Mercedes pre-2007. 229.51 addresses the need for low ash formulas ncessary for 2007 and later engines with particulate filter technology. The best price with rebate (purchase must be by October 31) seems to be at Walmart and Amazon: Mobil 1 0w40: $13.47 for 5 quart jug after rebate

This is a screencap of the email I received from Mobil:
![]() I have submitted a rebate for two 5qt jugs but haven't received it yet. If anyone has an issue with their rebate from a Walmart purchase and would like the email forwarded to them send me a PM. Last edited by party; 10-29-2016 at 12:39 AM. |

Amazon OK for rebate per Mobil = $13.47/5 quarts!
CORRECTION: I just spoke to Mobil's rebate information department and they said all retailers including Amazon are eligible for the rebate! You have to be sure to provide receipt and proof of shipment with on line retailers.
With rebate this makes final price $13.47/5 quarts or $2.69/quart!. Here is link to buy: Mobil 1 0W40: $13.47 for 5 quart jug after rebate Here is link to rebate form: Mobil 1 Rebate
