Mystery Green Light
Recently I pulled out the instrument panel in the 1987 300TD and noticed a wired small light bulb not installed in the panel, so I put it into a vacant light socket in the back of the instrument panel.
Turn out it's a green light between the glow plug light and the SRS light. It comes on when I turn the key and stays on a few seconds longer than the glow plug light and then goes out. There is nothing in the owners manual regarding this light. Does anyone have an idea what this light is for? I don't think it means GO as it goes out before I start the engine. Thanks, |

No ones posted anything so I'll open this up with this: DO you have pics you can upload?

I'm guessing that bulb fell out of one of the other locations. Based on what you said I'd guess it's actually the SRS light. Does it come on when you turn the key to position 2, or position 3?

compu 85....YOU ARE RIGHT!!
I'm a ninny, I plugged the bulb it into the wrong socket and didn't notice. Didn't drive the car after I posted until yesterday and then realized the SRS light wasn't coming on, so I did plug it into the wrong bulb socket. But I still wonder about the reason for the green light socket. |

The extra socket is unused in Diesel 124s. I repurposed it into an "Afterglow" light by running a wire from #1 glow plug to a lamp to ground. Whenever the glue plugs are energized the lamp is on. This allows me to confirm afterglow times and to detect a stuck-on preglow relay.
