Older style "star head" alternator adjuster?
Howdy folks,
I have a '78 240d with the old style of alternator adjustment, there's a hex head with "star shaped" part that rides in a track, you loosen everything up, tighten the head until everything is at the proper tension, then tighten it all back up. Sounds great except the PO totally rounded out the head of the adjuster. I've tried getting everything free then prying on the alternator etc but still I can't quite get it to proper tension....it'll be ok during dry days but as soon as I use lights, wipers etc.....the dreaded belt squeal. This part is no longer available. What are my options here? thanks, Mk |

Source a good used bolt or weld a nut onto the current one.

Sometimes a 6-point socket will turn nuts and bolts rounded by a 12-point combination or socket.
I don't know if there is enough room for one of these but the below type of vise grips if here is room for it works on rounded nuts and bolts. They come in various sizes. Members on this forum have recommended the smaller ones for use on rounded brake line fittings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW4BHAgtpLM

Yeah my next step was some sort of vice grip or pulling the whole bolt out & refilling the flats down . Mek |
