1982 300D TurboDiesel No Tachometer?
Good afternoon everyone,
About a month ago I became a proud owner of 1982 300D Turbodiesel project. Unfortunately, it doesn't run... I feel horrible for the car because previous owners have severely neglected it... Vacuum lines need to me completely redone, rust repaired, fenders and frond doors switched out, interior overhauled, etc etc... Yesterday I was doing some work with the interior and noticed that instrument cluster had NO tachometer (it has an older style instrument cluster with big clock), I felt that it didn't sound right so I decided to check on that. I did not really find if that year turbodiesels are supposed to have tachometer in the instrument cluster or not. Unfortunately I can't find out from the previous owner if the cluster has been switched out or not as he said that he only had it for a month before his wife made him sell it. I would really appreciate if you guys can help me, as I want to get her back to her original, former glory ![]() Almost forgot! I been to our local junkyard and they have a 1984 300D with Euro Headlight setup instrument cluster that has a tach. Is it possible to use that one if mine is supposed to have one (my cluster is cracked on the top and will get replaced sooner or later) |

my 82 300d turbo has a tach, and I belive all of the turbo's had a tach. Perhaps the instrument cluster or dash have been swapped in from another w123. Does it have a knob for idle adjustment? Because the 300d should also not have one of those.

Sorry, Just saw your reply.
If you are talking about the square-looking thing to the right of hard fuel lines under the hood I have that. Here is a pic of my instrument cluster if that's any help. I couldn't find any other knobs inside the car. ![]() I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm extremely new to the diesel engines and mercedes cars, so it is a big learning curve for me. |

The naturally aspirated w123 300D (with engine code OM617-91X) did come with a interior knob for idle adjustment. The later introduced turbo charged version (OM617-95X) did not have this knob. Most if not all vehicles with the om617-95X did indeed have a tachometer- however the 1982 model year was the change over time for sedans; some had the turbo and some did not. The wagons came with the turbo one model year earlier.

Thanks that's some useful info. Mine's a dark blue (indigo...don't remember actual name) turboed sedan. Where on the car would I be able to find engine code?
