Can I get one good key out of two bad ones?

Got one key that opens the doors, but is not recognized by the ignition. Got another key that starts the car, but won't lock and unlock the doors. Any way to combine these two half bad keys into one good one?

You could re-key one or both of them. I'm working on 1 ignition lock & a door lock. There are lots of discussions about how to change the leafs to match a key. I just ran into a snag getting the ignition lock completely apart & will post pics when I get a chance.

Yes you can combine them, it is called a key ring. ( Tee Hee ) Actually I would not call the keys bad, it appears that at some point someone replaced the ignition lock.

Changing the pins on the doors / trunk is probably less work per cylinder but more work overall.

At one point I had 3 cars and one set of keys ( Ford Escort , Ranger, Bronco )

What kind of car is this? More modern platforms like the w210 have an internet of electronics that are all "coded" together. The electronic portion of the key is part of this. The mechanical portion is not. Its probably cheaper to have the mechanical portion re-keyed, than to have the electronics re-coded. Unfortunately it may require a visit to the dealer for either one. For an older platform like the w123, I would think a locksmith could change the tumbler pins to all be consistent.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm talking about my E300D. The ignition has never been replaced. I have one good key that works, so these two half-bad ones are my emergency keys and if I can't fix them, then the key ring idea will work if I ever need them.
