om617 IP removal.

As far as I can tell the FSM says nothing about a locking tool to remove the IP. I saw one video where the guys rotated the engine to 24 BTDC then just took the IP off.

Is this so? I've read many threads which indicated an IP locking tool was needed but don't recall any specifically for the 617.120 engine

It's useful but not needed for either removal or installation

Thank you much. I don't have the tool and I'm scheduled to remove an IP in the morning. I really don't mind buying the tool but it will take a few days to get it delivered. Just 24BTDC and watch the timing marks on the IP, correct?

24 btdc on compression stroke if you match the marks in front of the ip.

15 atdc on power stroke if you look through the hole where you put the locking tool

Also good to verify it with the drip tube method after installing

Can do, this one is a spare. I plan to drip time the one on the engine after getting it on the road.

Not all of the Fuel Injection Pumps have the port for the timing locking pin.

The W126 FSM makes no mention of it in its OM617 IP removal instructions. Following those instructions the pump came off just fine.

I'm just wondering if the IP is going to go back on to another engine now. I pulled the steering gear because I wanted it. I also wanted the oil filter housing so I took it. The pump was still difficult to get off. All in all it took me about four hours for all that. I was working alone until I got to the rear bolts on the IP.

No locking tool needed to remove or install the pump.
Be aware that early pumps have the alignment mark on the wrong spot. Align the shaft mark with the upper left screw.
