300D Euro 5 Speed Transmissions
 

I've got a source in Europe working on grouping some parts for my diesel swap project. It started with looking for a 300D OM617 flywheel and its looking like I'll have access to a few of those, and so far 3 5sp manual transmissions.

Is there any interest in a group buy on this stuff? My base cost is just under $500 on whole transmissions as of right now.

Id hop on the boat at 500! She could use an extra gear

1) Manufacturer - MB or Getrag
2) Type/Model(s) - 716.xxx, 717.xxx
3) Engine applications
4) Availability of shift linkages and crossmembers
5) Availability of flywheels & clutches
6) Shipping and customs charges

Also, truck or car 617 flywheel.

1. I am interested in getting a set-up for my latest project, a OM617.95X station wagon . This would entail: gearbox for five-cylinder, clutch, flywheel and pedal. Anything else I might need?


2. I would do the same to a semi-project car that's a beautiful 82 300SD with OM6217.952 Not buying anything unless really unusual, and selling a 190D and a couple of 240D MTs to thin the herd and finance the others. This will start in earnest in the spring or soon after.

I'm figuring a conversion with everything plus shipping will be in the 750-900 range.,

I have shipped 3 complete transmission .400 sets to States in last 3-4 years
shipment only (trustworthy and secure) can not be done under 650 USD as I remember... there are some cheaper shady (by boat or so...) options not involving delivery to specific address but I did not want tackle that one...

the best one I can find EU-USA was Fedex,...others i.e DHL had some insane quota....

It's a lot of money for a transmission that's not torque rated for a .95x

I'd like to move to the 5spd club, but I'm wary of a new user with 5 posts to his name coming in trying to get money together. I respect your efforts, but for those reasons, I'm out.

If you can get them together and sell for under 1200USD$ shipped I think a few would sell here...

I do enjoy making a few bucks on occasion simply by sourcing the un-sourcable. I read post after post about these gearboxes being unobtanioum or outrageously valued on the US market.

This fizzled out on my end because I didn't have time to stay on the suppliers ass. Junk yards are sometimes hard enough to deal with when they're local, even harder when in England.

Here is the contact info of the yard in England who's got some 5spd's and claims to be able to source more. Maybe an established member can take the wheel on this one. I spend a bit of time trying to find a wrecking yard in Europe who'd bother with exporting used transmissions. Out of more than a dozen sources I solicited either directly or through salvage parts sites these guys were the only ones responsive and willing.

My advise, don't bother emailing until its time to finalize on the deal. Get them on the phone to keep a dialogue moving. Email will fizzle out, like it did with me. Their website is completely worthless as well.

I'd be skeptical about them easily being able to source more 717.400's. These are even getting rare in Europe.

Can the 5-speed “Big Iron” transmissions be adapted to the W123? There seem to be more of them available, plus they are more robust than the 5-speed Getrags.

For that kind of money you can find a good 60X motor and 5 speed and spend on putting it in.

The 717.000 will bolt right on to my knowledge, yes. I would have to wonder about being more common though - 5 speeds weren't as common - some cars still had 2 or 3 speeds when those came out. But yes, they would be stronger than the Getrags I'm sure
