drain location and clearing
I just finished (finally) reparing my drivers side floorpan where. So now I need to deal (quickly) with the problem that caused the rusting out. Every time it rains, I get a small pool of water in the floorpan where my feet rest. It seems like the water is dripping down from the plastic over that is under the steeringwheel and instrument cluster. I could be wrong though.
SO what drain/drains need to be cleared? Is it the sunroof drain? Or is there one where the hood hinges close? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I really wish that someone would post pictures of these drains. If I was right, there are two drains in the trunk (one on each side, below the plastic covers)
I found two more below the car (these should be pretty obvious if you look at the car from the side - they look like two nozzles coming out of the car). Just clean those using a screwdriver. There is another one that I found behind the passenger side headlight. It's on the same plate as the wheel wells. Just that it's right behind the headlight. If you can't see it, remove all the sand, etc. There is supposed to be another one near the battery? never found it. The floor drains, I've never seen either...

look inside your wheel wells right behind the front tires. You should see a little plastic box looking thing about 2.5x1.5 inches long by wide. This is the cover for the drains that cause many of the problems you are talking about. They get filled with road dirt from the tires and leaves that wash in from the top. You can pry them open enough to get most of the trash out and then run a coat hanger up to see where they come out to finish washing them down.

oh those water leaks
Sean,
Use the 'search' feature! I have found water leaks here and there. There are four drains under the hood; symetrically; under the brake booster and battey and the hood support hinges. The wind shield seal is also a common problem area. CHECK MY OTHER POSTS on this topic! I have found all my leaks and know how trying it can be. If you think this tough, wait till the vacuum system blows!

I cut the bottoms out of mine. You want that water and debris to flow through it. Will try to post a pic in the morning.

I was cleaning drains on the 240 today and noticed that the front drains in the wheel wells have a big hole in the bottom and while they had a little bit of big chunks in them they were pretty clean. Why did somebody think that 300d should be a closed up box? I am always cleaning those, never thought to cut a hole in them. Will be doing that soon.

Water leak under steering area
Silverfish,
Check the gromet that is around the speedo cable where it comes through the firewall, very often the gromet breaks leaving a big hole that lets water through. If it's broken just fill it up with silicone seal and it'll last forever, Good luck! Ben |
