Speedometer/odometer failure causing cruise failure
Recently picked up a very solid 300sdl from 1986. Plenty of small fixes but I believe it to overall be a great find. The speedometer and odometer are both not working. It has become my understanding that this is pretty common. While I’ll fix them eventually, I’m wondering if the speedometer being out caused the cruise control to also go out. Seems likely, but wanted to ask the community. I can live without speedometer and odometer for a while but it would be niiiiiice to have working cruise control. Whatcha got?

Yes of course if the speed sensor is out the cruise control will not work. It still may have other issues as well. To repair before the cruise control system is working.

Yes MBs of that era used a pickup off the back of the speedometer for vehicle speed reference. This was used for not only the cruise but also fed into the outside temperature display, audio system, and climate control.
