w115 Steering wheel super difficult to turn

Hey Guys,

picking up a w115 220D tomorrow and the steering wheel is super difficult to turn with the motor running. Anyone have any suggestions ? I'm trying to limp the car home and don't mind if its hard to turn the wheel since I've driven non power steering vehicles before. Just curious if theres any easy roadside fix I can do.

thanks!

Fill the tires to the max recommended (usuually on the fuel door) to lower the rolling resistance.

Is there a belt to the power steering pump? Is there power steering fluid?

Check the power steering pump filter. It might be full of sludge.

My 1968 220d doesn't have power steering. So it isn't clear to me if there is a problem with this car being discussed (I just re-read that the OP did confirm a power steering pump, so maybe my comments are irrelevant). Is it hard to steer at very low speed, or hard to steer at high speed? On the freeway, it is not particularly noticeable that my car doesn't have power steering.

Even if the car is equipped with power steering, I see no problem driving it like a car without PS.

The car should be pretty good even with it not working. ...course I have the torso of a Neanderthal so I might not be the best judge.

We used to call it Armstrong power steering and they made special knobs that went on the steering wheel (with a picture of a lady inside).

A far fetched possibility is that the steering box has been previously over-adjusted for slack and is binding.

Okay so just to update this I bought the car Tuesday night and drove it about 35 miles home. It ran (I would say great) but had a few issues.

I stopped by an auto zone and picked up some ATF to fill up the power steering tank - it was bone dry when I got the car. After filing it twice it seemed to hold fluid fine and now the steering is greatly improved.

I noticed the bottom oil cooler line had a healthy leak. Thinking I'll loop em til I get around to replacing them.

Shifting was difficult to say the least. I think the shift bushings are completely worn out. It's pretty tough to get the shifter over and up for first and over and down for second.

Lastly, the blower motor does not work at all. I checked and the fuse is not burnt out. Could this be a switch or is it most likely the motor itself?

Other than that she runs like a top!

We're going to need pictures.....

The blower motors often wear out the brushes .

I'd not wait long before replacing both the oil cooler hoses .

I vaguely recall the heater blower on the w115 possibly being a lubrication issue as well. You will find several threads which document how hard it is to actually get to that motor/fan. You basically have to take apart the entire dash, which is non-trivial and could result in some broken parts as you pry things to figure out how it all comes apart.
