Adjusting w115 Steering Box
Went to adjust the steering box in my 72 W115 220D today and it turns out its not like my 82 240D.
Anyone know the proper method to adjusting this box? Also, need to know how to properly adjust the manual trans shift linkage after taking it apart for a bushing replacement. I think I got it approximately correct but reverse is a BEAR to get into. thanks! |

my steering box is a power unit. Funny that the PO told me it needed to be replaced because it was leaking.. turns out both the hoses leak but the box is fine, just needs an adjustment. |

Also look for rust in the frame the box bolts to. I had to repair a couple of them years ago on 114 cars.
Test was to have someone watch the box as the steering was rotated side to side. Box moves at all a plate had to be welded in to support it. |

There is an adjuster with a lock nut. Allen on the adjuster IIRC. The lock nut is 17mm IIRC. Loosen the lock nut and turn the allen counter clockwise with steering wheel straight ahead until you feel resistance then back off enough to free it up.
The boxes last a very long time and will take adjustment in my experience with well over 300K on them. The boxes were in production and used with minor variations in 123 and 126 models at least...well until racks came into favor I imagine.

![]() I'll have to power wash it down and then take a stab at it. Honestly I was pretty surprised when I got my w123 and adjusted the steering box. It really steers amazing now and has pretty much all original suspension components @ 165k miles. |
