W124 Wagon Liftgate
Hello. I just bought a 1987 300TD. I've since gotten the engine running and the transmission to shift. The rear hatch doesn't open, and I was told it hasn't worked in years.
The key goes in, and it does lock and unlock. I have the panel pulled apart on the inside. I can lift on the handle, and it pulls and pushes on several rods and such. I truly have no idea what I'm looking at, as I've never worked on a wagon before. What does it even grab on to when it's closed? A loop, or a stud, or something on the body of the car? |

The rear hatch latches onto a loop of steel that is bolted to the sill, directly in the middle of the sill below the outside button.
Have you read the owner's manual on locking / unlocking? I think that lock has three positions, like the trunk locks on the sedans? Not sure myself, my wagon's hatch lock doesn't work with a key, only with the vacuum locking from the central locking. If your wagon's latch works like the sedans, insert the key and turn it all the way left (counter-clockwise) so that the top of the key points at about 10:00 o'clock or maybe even 9. This fully unlocks the hatch. If you turn the key to the right to lock all the doors with the central locking, and then keep turning the key past a click, the hatch will be locked mechanically so that it won't unlock with the central locking. This is a feature, so that if you had a valet key for the car and gave that to a valet, they could only lock / unlock the doors and the ignition, and would not be able to get into the trunk / rear hatch.

Okay, so it is a loop on the car, and "jaws" on the mechanism fold over it, right? I'm pretty sure it's unlocked. I can use the key, pull up on the stud inside, or even just reach into the gizmo itself and move the parts that actually unlock it. At least I think that's what I'm doing.

It's pretty cold out, so I haven't messed with it in a few days. The button outside does nothing. There is a lock plunger and handle inside the car, too. While trying to open the gate with the interior handle, nothing. Something is no longer connected...

If the latch is locked, the button moves effortlessly when pushed. You will feel pressure and it will definitely be obvious when it releases with a low click. Likely one of the linkages (and there's a BUNCH of them) in the latch mechanism has come loose so either it isn't unlocking or the button no longer activactes the lock. Either will produce the same result. Make sure the inside lock plunger is moving coreectly and you can hear the lock click when it is pulled up to unlock or pushed down to lock. If that is working, it has to be the button linkage.
