Any tips about manual trans shifter refurbish?

I'm just about to swap in 5 speed manual into 84 300TD.

I have never worked in the shifter mechanism, this one may have as much as 400K miles on it.

Does anyone have tips about parts to replace in the shifter mechanism to head off possible shifting problems requireing me to take it out for repair later.?

I had scant chance to drive the car with donor 5 speed , the trans is quiet but the shifter mechanism could probably stand some "tune up"

Thanks in advance if anyone has ideas, experience.

Mine is to be found from post 920 onwards (yep nine hundred and twenty - things did get that bad!) in this thread =>

I might be able to help with immediate / direct questions if it isn't clear enough in the write up. BUT bear in mind it was a few years back and I is getting old...

I'm not sure how similar 4 speed Getrag and 5 speed shifters are but with my 4 speed shifter I just replaced the bushing on the shift rods and all is good. No clue if that's typical or not but that's what worked for me. And I shift Mutt pretty hard at the track - drag race style.

New linkage bushings make a huge difference.
This video is for a -201 shifter. It's similar to the -123 but smaller.
