From Wikipedia:
In electricity supply systems, an earthing system or grounding system is circuitry which connects parts of the electric circuit with the ground, thus defining the electric potential of the conductors relative to the Earth's conductive surface.

For when (if) it stops raining

I found this information on a different site =>

Ground/earthing Points

Too wet to be messing about with earthing points so I...

...whipped this bit off for a bit of mechanical fun.

The 5th and reverse gears have been difficult to engage and I'm kind of hoping it is the shifter and not the synchromesh...

...so whilst I'm "at it" I'm going to re-coat the shifter wood surround

These pictures are more for me than you!

These cracks will hopefully be gone soon

Easiest way to remove varnish from Mercedes wood

Ideally pure acetone should be used but nail polish remover (with acetone) is good too

Borrowed a baking tin from the landlady (she doesn't know...)

Covered the evidence with a plastic bag pretty sharpish =>

5 speed shifter disassembly

Here's some pictures of the progress so far

Two obvious 10mm head bolts come out

Be careful it is spring loaded!

(No stress really - just kidding)

Poings out quite nicely

After which the levers for the shifter rods come out in a group.

Whilst EPC has a nice break down of the positions of the washers and the spring washers it is worthwhile noting how they all go together again

I missed a washer from the other end (see next post)

5 speed shifter disassembly (2)

Couldn't find any tie wraps (!)

I did find a use for a glove though...

There's nearly always one left behind just after you tie the knot =>

A clear plastic end cap can also be removed

Fiddly little C clips on either end of a retaining pin can be pushed off with care and two electrical screw drivers

Little c clips - keep just in case (although they are also in the repair kit)

The next stage will be to remove the two torx headed screws but I want to make sure I don't loose my place on that shaft

Sorry the pictures aren't so great today.

The shortest length of that shaft pictured above is 34mm and the longer length shown in the last picture of the previous post is 69mm

Before I take out those little torx screws I'm going to check with JB3 to see if I've missed something. (I think he's done this before)

Here's the repair kit

Please note part number 1242602539 is not for the more common grouping of 5 speed shifters! This kit is for the reverse with the up and back to the left next to 2nd gear configuration...

This is why I run tires with the metal mesh showing. It gives me a better connection to earth than rubber tires.

Oh deary me!

Don't do this on a W201!

It melted all of the plastic place holders from the back of the wood...

...drat.

Half a step forward - two steps back.

I'll post pictures later.

2015 is the year of vinyl wraps. Just try and resist the temptation to buy neon green carbon fiber print

Ha! For my age group it is probably still fake leopard prints I'm afraid to say. You have a point though...

More on the varnish stripping

Two nights and the wood came clean =>

The old varnish just flakes off

The disaster on the underside is here =>

I'll see how bad it is after I've re-sprayed the varnish covering. May be I can wedge the switches in place - "a bit extra on the side Sir"?

Earth points...

...ground control to Major Tom...

Front headlight RHS

Front headlight LHS

(It always seems to be wet under this headlight)

All of these connections seemed a little "dusty"

Earth points continued...

...The wires from the inlet manifold shown above eventually go to the chassis via the earth strap close to the starter motor (not touched this one yet) and a connection next to the coil (that also holds the coil in place)

(You can just about see the socket on the nut in the picture above)

The main connections from the battery to the chassis were a bit rusty around the edges

The points shown so far have been cleaned and then covered in grease (dag nam it!)
