powersteering tensioner plastic nut thing

Anyone have one? Anyone know the part number?
Is it possible to put my ps pump together without it?

You might look on eBay to see if there is a used one.

Lots of other power steering pumps out there with out the nice adjustment that Mercedes provided. Adjusting them usually involves loosening the mounting Bolts and using something to pry the pump putting tension on the belt and then tightening up the mounting bolts so the pump remains stationary and the tension is retained.

Thanks Diesel911. That is the kind of reassurance I needed. I was thinking, "if I can pull it enough then tighten..." Your post confirms this. Thanks.

I just loosened my PS pump to get belt off. It was a struggle. But I don't recall any "plastic nut thing". What the heck is that?

OK, found this thread on BW. I guess it is the nut inside the adjuster. Hope mine is still good!

Hope you don't mind me responding. It has internal threads as a Nut does but is sort of a plastic side. If you don't loosen all of the Blots that mount the power steering pump and turn the adjustment blot you easily strip the plastic slide.

Post P.S. Pump Adjuster

Yes, often folks don't loosen all of the bolts before trying to adjust the belt's slack and strip this out ~ I had one metal one from my '79 300CD IIRC .

So the reason this thread started is because I'm rebuilding/sealing the ps pump. For those of you who done this, when you compress the back plate and remove the spring, should the back plate come out fairly easy? Is it screwed in there? I've managed to remove the spring but can't get that plate out. Any tricks to this? Maybe my plate is mashed in there at an angle or the seal is jamming it??

There's a linked DIY on this job @ Pelican Parts IIRC .

I just changed the input shaft's seal and Lo ! . no more weepy power steering ATF everywhere .

I used a sheet metal screw to push the old, rock hard seal out and a deep socket to gently knock the new one in .

I got the back plate off. Just in case someone does a search and is in the same situation. My back plate was stuck...looked to be jammed in ever so slightly off square. I took a vice grip and managed to pull it out. In the above thread I asked if it screwed in somehow. It does not. A bonus to all this back plate issue is that I managed to muck up the front seal which was next on the list. All the fighting with the back plate pushed the pulley shaft in and out. The woodruff key was still in tact and it pretty much damaged the front seal bushing (in a good way).

I had all the bolts loose and one out altogether trying to loosen the tension on the belt. Not sure what is preventing pump from moving totally to end of slots. But will get back to that after alt goes in.

My advice is, once you get the tensioner unloosed all the way, don't mess with it..regardless of whether or not you can slide to the ends. Or else you will be where I am on post #1..where can I buy a new plastic tensioner thing (which i ordered at classic mercedes for like $1.60 today!).

Per the instructions, I used a 6" clamp but it wasn't wide enough to accommodate the pulley shaft and the backing plate. Speaking of this step, is there a trick to getting this thing mashed back together? I have an 8" clamp now but can't seem to compress the cap down to where it needs to be to install the spring clip.

My shaft is moving in and out. I've put the pulley back on and the bolt to keep it from pushing against the innards and essentially pushing the back plate out. Does anyone have a diagram of the innards? I'm thinking I may have assembled the inside incorrectly??

Post P.S. Pump Rear Plate

DISCLAIMER : I've not yet had to take one fully apart but the idea is to push the back plate into the pump housing proper so I'd remove the pulley and use a deep socket against the pump's housing not the shaft, making sure it's not cocking ever so slightly as that'll prevent it from pushing fully home to where you can install the snap ring again .

freaking brilliant! I'll give it a try. This is what happens when you read DIYs and can't creatively come up with a solution. Thank god for the forum!

Thumbs up Helping Hands

Hadly brilliant, just the application of 5 decades of mechanical works .

I agree, Technical Forums are great ~ I learn so much more than I could ever pay back .
