Brand is irrelevant, they all buy from the same bunch of manufacturers, even Mercedes. The most useful tool to me is the customer reviews on Amazon and their free return policy. I don't know why more online parts retailers don't match that policy (I'm looking at you, peachparts).I Also check warehouse deals quite often. Usually it's open or damaged box items at 1/4 the price. For car parts it really doesn't matter. Recently picked up CLS550 330mm front rotors for my E320, $22 a pop shipped to my door with a free return policy if I don't like them. Hard to beat that.

+1 Some of the bad press is overdone, or an excuse for amateur wrenching, or an ego trip. We can talk about an individual part as being a problem, but even there the first question to ask is whether the manufacturer has been contacted and whether they have shown interest in correcting the problem. Given that more OEM stuff goes NLA every day, it's madness to attack companies that are trying to fill the void.

The only brand I actively avoid like the plague is Üro. If you like buying parts again and again and never having them fit or work properly, the Üro is the brand for you!

My car has tons of Febi, Trucktec, and Meyle parts on it. I'm not losing sleep and they haven't caused any problems.

Nearly every Febi part I've installed was an identical replacement for the OEM MB-star stamped piece I pulled off. Some (flex discs) even from the same manufacturer with the same part number. Usually at 1/4 to 1/2 price of the OEM piece that differs only by having that star embossed on it.

If the goal is to be a snob (and boy are there a lot of them on this board) and try to make a "concours car" that will never seen a concours and you have deep enough pockets, make friends with the dealership parts department.

If your goal is to fix up the car and drive it, aftermarket parts should be on your "approved" list.

From an E500 board post way back when...

Many folks wonder as to which brands (OEM and aftermarket) are good quality and are worthy of purchasing. Here is a listing (subject to change and modification over time) as to which vendors are "safe" to buy from and which ones have "caution" and "do not buy" flags.

This list is based on the experience and observation of ********* members. This includes part materials quality, part fitment, part longevity once installed, etc.

Brands that are generally considered "safe":
Akebono (brake pads)
ATE (brake rotors, calipers, hoses, etc.)
Balo (brake rotors)
Bilstein (suspension and various parts)
Boge (some say should be in the "inconsistent" list)
Brembo (brake calipers and systems)
Bremi (M119 distributor caps & rotors)
Brose-Coburg (window regulators -- Magneti Marelli is ACCEPTABLE, but barely)
Bosch (electrical & ignition parts, pumps, motors, and other various parts)
Behr (radiators/cooling/HVAC system & other various parts)
Beru (ignition wires and parts)
Bosal (exhaust systems and catalytic converters)
Bruss (vacuum line, small rubber parts & seals)
CIS Flowtech (rebuilt M117 fuel heads)
Cohline (vacuum connectors, brake lines, fuel lines)
Contitech (belts & rubber)
Denso (A/C compressors - new & rebuilt)
Eberspächer (exhaust and related components)
Elring Klinger (gaskets & seals)
FAG (bearings)
Fichtel-Sachs (fan clutches, now Horton)
Gemo (speedo cables, throttle cables, brake and hood cables)
Graf (water pumps)
Hengst (oil and air filters)
Hella (various parts)
Hirschmann (antenna parts & trim)
Horton (fan clutches, was Fichtel-Sachs)
INA (bearings)
IWIS (crank and cam chains)
Karlyn (ignition wires, spark plug boots, ignition parts ONLY!!! Anything else = junk.)
Laso (water pumps)
Löbro/GKN (axles)
Leistritz (exhaust and related components)
Lemfoerder (a ZF Group brand; suspension components)
Mahle (oil and air filters)
Mann (oil and air filters)
Osram/Sylvania (bulbs of all types)
Pex (brake pad wear sensors)
Pierburg (vacuum switchover valves)
Porterfield (brake pads)
Programa (rebuilt climate control assemblies)
Reutter (coolant overflow caps)
Sachs (some say should be in the "inconsistent" list)
SGF (flex discs)
Sitronic (monovalves/duovalves/heater valves)
Stribel (relays)
Swag (timing chain tensioners & other mech parts)
Sylvania/Osram (bulbs of all types)
Textar / Pagid / Jurid (brake pads - dusty SOBs)
Timken (bearings)
VDO-Siemens (vacuum parts, switches, various parts)
Victor Reinz (gaskets & seals) - generally consider good
Wahler (thermostats)
Woco (vacuum connectors, ACC vacuum pods, rubber gaskets, rubber exhaust hangers)
Zimmermann (brake rotors)

The "sometimes OK but inconsistent" brands list includes:
ACM (fan clutch is 1/5 cost of new, no catastrpohic failures reported yet)
Corteco (rear SLS spheres, driveshaft rubber/pinion seals) <-- M119 Corteco engine mounts were Chinese junk!
CRP (Quality varies, may be Chinese parts)
Egelhof
Elaplast (radiator hoses)
EZ Ziegler (acquired by Trucktec in 2010, which isn't a good sign)
FAE (coolant temp sensors, oil pressure sensors, etc - questionable status)
Febi (trending downward, mainly a re-boxer of others' parts)
Fischer & Plath (sealing rings, gaskets)
FTE (brake and clutch cylinders, hoses)
Hansa
Ina
KAE (not recommended)
Kostal
Lucas/Girling (OEM for many brake parts, should be OK)
Meyle (quality can vary by product line)
Nissens (radiators - not always 100% perfect fitment, and lack metal sleeve inside hose fittings)
Rein Automotive (a CRP company, some parts are made in China)
Santech (o-rings)
TRW (Note: TRW is the OEM for certain MB steering/suspension parts, but some TRW aftermarket parts have proven to berepackaged Febi junk!)
Ulo
Vaico (hoses, suspension bushings - some parts are made in China)
Vemo (various electrical & mechanical parts - M119 Vemo fan clutch not recommended)

The "NEVER BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES" brand list includes:
Anchor Products
APA Industries (parent company of ÜRO)
Beck-Arnley
Dorman
DPH
FEQ (First Equipment Quality, check out their awesome website)
Hagus
Hamburg Tech
Jahn
Karlyn (Ignition parts may be ok. Maybe.)
MTC (Mission Trading Company)
Meistersatz
Python (rebuilt M117 fuel heads)
R&S
Trucktec
ÜRO (pure garbage!)

tjts1 12-13-2018 10:40 AM

The above list is bull ****

Who wants to put some new genuine Made in India Bosch injector nozzles in their diesel? Who wants to pay extra for genuine Made in China Febi engine mounts?

Read reviews, apply critical thinking and take it on a part by part basis. Condemning entire brands out of hand because some guy on some forum said so is dumb.

Mxfrank 12-13-2018 12:51 PM

Yup. Total nonsense. I can give you a list of parts on his never buy list that worked fine for me. And a few on his always safe list that didn’t. I even have some URO stuff happily working in my car today.

jsp300D 12-13-2018 05:30 PM

Thanks all for the replies, I have old stock Bosch injectors made in Germany.

My waterpump is NLA so I have to wait on Hella-Behr.

rocky raccoon 12-13-2018 07:22 PM

There is a difference between OE (Original Equipment) and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

For example, URO is an OEM. Bosch is OE although I am not sure it applies to Chinese and India-made Bosch.

jsp300D 12-13-2018 07:59 PM

Here in Europe we never heard of the brand URO?

you are quite fortunate my friend.

I have heeded that above list for 5 years at least and it has paid off well for me. Personally I avoid URO at all cost. I only get Febi if its between MB parts (if it is unjustifiably expensive) and URO. lemförder is your best bet on suspension/ drive line. Pay for quality parts if your putting something into your engine (chains/guide rails/bearings etc) All MB gaskets are made by victor reinz so you can save money there. ( I have ordered Genuine MB gaskets and they arrive with the VR logo all over)

General rule of thumb Chinese parts = avoid (unless its easily replaceable or you like doing handwork twice). If you can find German/European parts/USA go for those, and you'll rest easy.

*Always* try to find reviews on that specific parts, and at the very least on the brand.

'All The Same'

Anyone who says this simply has zero experience and is talking price .

I spent over five decades not only repairing cars but selling the parts and NO ONE buy 'all the same', that's a cop out line by cheapskates .

Much of the aftermarket stuff is very good indeed and much of it is in fact the same part, same manufacturer, missing only the manufactuere's mark .
