exhaust build ideas

So i have started scourcing parts for my exhaust build on the e300 TD. Found a 3/4 marmon flange is stainless. Debating on getting a 2ft piece of 304ss and a 304 flange for the end. So only the back end is mild steel. Also looking foe options on a high flow muffler for this car. Exhaust will be all 3" from the turbo back, no cat.

I suggest you try it without a muff. My Stude truck has a straight pipe off the exhaust manifold (or turbo I guess) and its very quiet. The whistle of the turbo can be played too. Fun. It sounds like a baby cummins.

I ran my 300d na with a turbo exhaust and only one muff. it was just fine. I think a four cylinder may be harder to muff though. But if you have at least one I think you'll be fine on that. With the turbo it is amazingly not very loud.

The e300 is a dohc 6cyl om606. Did you put a flex pipe on the system?

I never did a 606. I always keep the flex if it comes with one.

I haven't seen a conventional flex portion. It looks like mercedes uses some sort of accordian style fitting. Decided I'm going stainless Marmon flange to elbow with a ss flex pipe all tigged. Then the remainder will be 16ga conventional. I might put a flange in there not sure yet.

I run 3 inch straight pipe from the turbo the entire way back. No mufflers or anything. Sounds like a Peterbilt at idle but isn't too loud under load. No drone or anything.

I've got a rusted out joint right after the cat and on my second patch job.

Not sure if it can be welded so...how much of an improvement have you folks had with a straight pipe conversion, no cat, on your e300? Also what's the rough cost of just eliminating the cat and welding a piece of 2.5" pipe instead?

I think if you straight pipe the 300e you'll find it a bit rowdy and tiring on the highway. I'd keep the cat myself. With one of the two muffs it will give some growl but not be offensive.
