1980 722.118 Trans won't upshift past 2nd
Ok folks, I'm at a bit of a loss on this one. I just spent the last 2 months replacing everything on the front and rear suspension of my 300TD. I also tuned up the engine and adjusted the valves. I test drove it after I got everything back together, and the trans shifted normally. I took it on the highway and got up to 60mph. I took it back to my garage to get my tires so I could have them installed. As I was leaving to the tire shop my car would not shift past 2nd. I can shift to L to get 1st, but that's it. I figured I must've knocked a vacuum line loose or something, so I tested and inspected the whole vacuum system, and everything seems to be correct. I also tested the kickdown switch and solenoid, which also seem to be working correctly. I then thought something may have been sticking in the trans, so I drained out all the old ATF and installed a new filter, and added some trans x to the new ATF. Tested and adjusted the modulator too, but it seems to be doing it's job as well. She still won't shift past 2nd, and I'm not really sure what else to do. I have heard of a sticking or broken governor, could this cause these problems? Thanks!

vw:
Per the trouble shooting chart in the FSM there are three possible causes for not up-shifting past 2nd: 1) Selector sleeve detached. [Not likely if you can shift into N,R, & P] 2) Jammed 2-3 command valve. 3) Low governor pressure. Does the speedometer work correctly, or does it skip and/or fluctuate? Improper speedo operation and low governor pressure are linked. Both the speedo gear and the governor are stacked on the output shaft, and clamped by the nut that secures the three-legged output flange on the shaft. If the three-legged flange wears a bit, and clamping force is lost, then both the governor and the speedo gear are free to not turn with the shaft. |

The speedometer works, as I can get up to about 25mph but that's it. Reverse and park both work. The thing that is boggling my mind is the trans has worked great for the year or so I've owned it, and up till the other day had no problems. Could sitting the last few months have caused something to jam?

If you have not already done so, try operating the car with the wire removed from the KD solenoid. The solenoid may also be unscrewed from the trans, and checked for free operation. When the solenoid is energized it dumps governor pressure. |

Quick test of solenoid:key on,engine off, activate kick down switch, listen for
clicking of solenoid, not the switch,if clicking ok. If no clicking,ck electrical, ck solenoid. These do jam open some times. |

I tested the kickdown switch both in the car and on the bench and can confirm it works.

*Meant to say the kickdown solenoid.

Anyone else have any ideas as to what I can try? Trying to see if there's anything I can try before pulling the trans.

Remove valve body for inspection before removing the whole trans. |

I fixed the problem today by swapping the valve body from a spare transmission I had. Shifts smoothly through all the gears now!
