W123 bumpers

I was looking at the bumper clamping rails for replacement. Looking at photo I am not sure what holds them tight up against the bumper? I know they show the little bracket like tabs, but I thought there must be something else to hold them on the bumper face. If that is the case, why do they fail and come loose. I see some from time to time without the bumper protectors.

This video was useful for learning how the trim goes together on these: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YLdX5pcCoCU I would use dawn dish soap instead of wd 40. While the trim is off is a good time to polish the chrome. Sometimes on an older rail it helps if you drill a small hole at each central end and tie them together there. I used a small computer zip tie to do that.

The video was really good, but it was off at the start of his installation. I was wondering if you can get the bumper pad and clip off of the bumper at the same time on the ends of the bumper. I haven't looked at the underneath on mine yet, but I was thinking there was supposed to be a pin holding the clips on the side of the bumper. I could be mistaken, but I thought I remembered encountering it in some previous reads. I thought about getting all new clips, but if the 3M double sided tape will work. I am inclined to just redo them that way.

Post W123 Bumper Impact Strip

Someone Gorilla Snotted the one on the back of my '82 240D, it's beginning to sag on the left half, I keep thinking I'll buy and install a new impact strip because the bumper and chrome are great but so far not.....

There are plastic push type rivets, 1 per side. Look up underneath the the bumper side end and you will see them the first fastener that holds the rail in. As for removal of the impact strip, I started where mine was coming loose and carefully worked to peel it away from the clamping rails. It is better to do this on a hot sunny day because the rubber is more pliable.

I was looking on pelican parts for the bumper clamping rails. There was also listed these bumper cover clips. The part no. for them is 230.990.00.92-9c75-m127. Where do they go in the bumper assembly?

That part number returns as the two piece retainer that holds the plastic trunk liners in place.......

My little tabs were all broken off on the black plastic rail. The screw holes were also ruined. I just did as somebody suggested here and drilled holes through and used flat head machine screws and nuts to attach the rail to the bumper. Then it was soap water and a mallet to get the rubber pad on.
