1982 240d blow by tube that going to the oil pan gap

I notice that there seems to be a big gap between the top of the oil pan and the tube that catches the blow by and returns the oil to the pan.

Does this gap seem normal? My car seems to be leaking oil on the top of the oil pan instead of returning the oil to the oil pan.
