Turn signal not cancel after steering box replacement

I recently had a shop remove and reseal my steering box. My turn signals canceled just fine prior to the work. (1/4 to 1/2 turn) Now they only cancel when I turn the steering wheel much further than before (about 3/4 turn or further). I understand that the process to remove / replace the steering box includes uncoupling it from the steering column shaft at the “rag” joint. Could the shop have rotated the steering wheel and coupled it upside down from where it was previously? This is true for both right and left turns.

Would the fix be to uncouple the “rag” joint and turn the wheel 180 degrees so that it’s not “upside down” so that the turn signals turn off normally? I understand that I’ll have to remove and reposition the steering wheel so it will be right side up.

Your thoughts about making the change to correct the turn signal canceling issue. Is there a “right side up / wrong side up” that affects turn signal cancellation?

Can I make this change without loosening the steering box or removing the column. (Just remove the “rag joint” bolts and rotate the upper column shaft?)

you should certainly tell the shop your issue.

Hi PwJeep,

I would first ask the shop to fix their screw up. If they don't, you'll need to do a bit of hacking which requires loosening ( but not dropping) the steering box .

You'll have to ensure that the box is centered correctly. Remove the drain plug and turn the wheel until you what looks like a dimple. That means your box is centered. There's a tool to keep it centered but you can get away with a the proper metric sized bolt. Search the forum.

Next look at the pitman arm . There should be a notch on the arm to the box. Is this lined up? If it is not, you will need to remove that nut, replace it, and realign it up. Removal and retorquing requires special tools. I don't envy you if this is the case.

Next, you'll need to remove the steering coupler bolts. Once they're out, remove the coupler from the box but do your best to keep it on shaft. The shaft is keyed in a particular way so it won't accept the coupler on any way but up.

Go to the wheel and recenter it. Do this by testing the turn signals, turning, and seeing if the switch resets.

Once you have it centered retighten the box and put the couplar back in. Button up the works and drive.

It's an involved but straight forwars process and not hard to mess up. Good luck!
