Exhaust valve replacement...
my "new" 300CD had no compression on at least one cylinder...the machine shop is cleaning up the top end and replacing some exhaust valves.
My question is: can you tell me about this procedure/what's involved/how complex/likely cost? Thanks |

Jim B+,
The cost is highly dependent on who does the job and how much they charge for how long it takes, plus parts. Generally I think you can assume $700 or so to take the head off and put it back on, with a gasket kit. The head work will involve an outside shop. They typically charge another $250 or so to disassemble, clean, reassemble and mill the head. Parts are extra. You will likely need 4 exhaust valves and possibly guides and maybe intakes and guides as well. Depending on mileage you may want springs. These parts can be price checked and purchased from FastLane. Once the head is off you may consider changing the chain too. Also available from FastLane I believe. I think you are looking at around 1500 to 1800 dollars. I may be high, but it is better to find out it can cost less than get started and find out it is going to be more than you have planned. By the way, did the guy do anything to confirm the problem is isolated to valves? Once you get the head off other stuff will be available to visually inspect. Good luck, Jim
